Love Death and Robots Title

Geek Errant Reviews: Love Death and Robots

March 17, 2019 Conor 0

Anthology series like Love Death and Robots always hold such fantastic promise. Love, Death and Robots as a title suggests this show could contain anything around those three ideas. Using the medium of animation, it can dive deep, with the sheer variety of content hopefully allowing for something every audience can enjoy. While the quality of each episode varies, the series as a whole is worth the minor time investment for the animation quality alone. Love Death and Robots is a new anthology series from Netflix. It’s a collection of 18 short animated episodes, each of varying lengths. These have been produced by a variety of studios. Which themselves have been adapted from a series of stories from sci fi writers. The series has been produced by David Fincher (Yes that one) and series creator Tim Miller with the scripts being adapted by Philip Gelat. Almost all of the episodes are science fiction based, with the subgenres varying between variations of Cyber, Steam and Diesel punk, Space Travel, Horror and more. . Since each episode is so short, and the effort required to buy in is so little, it’d be difficult to talk about each episode without spoiling them, but I did think there were a few standout episodes. Three Robots Adapted from a short story by John Scalzi, the second episode of the series is one of the strongest. Three Robots, on vacation in the ruins of a human city long after the apocalypse. There’s nothing particularly original here Read More

Venom Title

Venom Review: An Edgelord film with no Edge

October 6, 2018 Conor 0

Venom is not a good movie. Venom is not a well made movie. It fails to understand plot structure, basic theme escapes it and the characters are somehow awful, uncompelling and forgettable all at once. Venom is a fascinating trainwreck in slow motion that I watched with my mouth agape and my hands clawing at my face.

Life is Strange 2 Title

Life is Strange 2 Review: My Brother, Some Bother and Me.

September 29, 2018 Conor 0

Life is Strange 2 had a tough act to follow. The first season was an adventure game based around time travel and decision making with “intensely” loved female teen characters. This is a road trip story starring two Hispanic brothers where the main draw is that the younger of the two must be looked after and taught by the older of the two. For the most part in Episode 1, it’s impressive how well the transition goes.

Spider-Man Title Card

Spider-Man Review: A Spectacular Superhero Story

September 10, 2018 Conor 0

Spider-Man is the best superhero game that exists right now. It earns this title for so many reasons. Not just the superbly realised world of New York. Not just the simple yet challenging character action combat. Not even the intuitive webswinging that anchors the whole game. Spider-Man is the best superhero game because it understands the genre better than any so far. It is a game about being a hero, and doing good.

Vampyr Title

Vampyr Review: A Valiant Attempt at Vampiric Verisimilitude

June 5, 2018 Conor 0

An atmospheric blend of brawling combat action game and conversation based adventure game, Vampyr is the latest title from Dontnod Entertainment and Focus Home Interactive. Not a perfect game, but one worth your time even if you’re not fascinated by the gothic.

Quarantine Circular Title

Quarantine Circular Review: Talk Your Problems Out

On a boat, off the coast of Dubrovnik, there is an alien. First contact for humanity is beginning. It’s up to the player to decide what happens next. The newest game from Bithell Games is a more complex and interesting Text Adventure than you initially might think.

Frostpunk Review: Snowy City Survival Simulation

May 1, 2018 Conor 0

Frostpunk is a narratively driven city simulator from 11 Bit Studios, previously best known for This War of Mine. It’s set in a steampunk universe where the world has suffered a snow and ice based apocalypse. It requires a player to manage resource gathering, advancing the story by exploring the frozen world and balancing the discontent or hope of their society through laws and policies as they try to survive in a frozen wasteland.

Infinity War Title

Infinity War Review: The End of the World as we Know It.

April 26, 2018 Conor 0

This Infinity War review is spoiler free. For the quick version, it’s an entertaining solid film. There’s an unusual central viewpoint, a good use of the majority of the (quite large) cast and some clever through lines on 10 years of films to this point. If you like any of the Marvel Movies to date, then this film has something for you.

Ready Player One Title

Ready Player One Review: It’s Better than the Book.

March 30, 2018 Conor 0

Steven Spielberg has done something quite spectacular here. He’s made Ready Player One into a film that isn’t as stodgy and unpleasant as the book. In fact, Spielberg has taken this book and made an actually watchable adaptation.  It’s by no means great. But it’s watchable.
