Geek Errant Recommends: Qwerpline

Stories are great. Not all stories get the audience they deserve though. Every week, Geek Errant is going to pick one Book, Game, TV Series or Film and give it the spotlight. Some of these will be very niche, something that only a few people will ever care about. But that’s why they matter.
Everyone deserves to get their story heard. This week, LoadingReadyRun’s Qwerpline Radio Comedy is what’s recommended.

Sometimes you just need to get a little weird. By far one of the most charming and strange things I have the pleasure of recommending, Loading Ready Run’s Qwerpline is an excellent blend of improv comedy, slowly dovetailing story threads and excellent voice work.

Tune into QWRP FM’s Qwerpline, Nsburg’s premier radio programme, as G-Money (Graham Stark) and A-Train (Alex Steacy) guide you through news, current events and a whole host of segments including dourly serious arts critic Edith Slump (Kathleen DeVere), irrepressibly confident traffic reporter Richter Hammockslam (Ian Hornet) and hard hitting reporter, Summer Intern Derek. (Brendan ‘Beej’ Dery).
A growing world and cast of side characters fill out their programme, as they document the utterly ridiculous goings of on of their town. Follow the goings on of the Mason-esque Secret Pipesmen (whose recruitment posters are all over the town hall), the Nsburg Recycling Plant (who have had quite enough raccoons now, thank you) or maybe the team will have a call in from one of the wacky locals.

Narrative aside, the show is hilarious and excellently put together. The five cast members are clearly having a ball recording, and it shows in the final product. One of my particular favourite aspects is the fact that the cast are trying to make each other laugh as hard as the audience, so if a particularly great joke lands, the corpsing is left in. This gives the audience a chance to catch their breath and let the joke rest for a second. It also helps the audience connect with the performers in a way that’s similar to a live performance.

Finally, I have to talk about the graphics in the videos. Whilst the show is audio only, the crew’s artist (Featherweight) goes to every length to create appropriately odd and silly logos for the groups and companies mentioned in the show. He’s also done some full animation snippets from the show. These are a great bite sized way to see how great the show is.

It’s a perfect visual flair to furnish the programmes. Like I said above, it’s a joy to listen to, and thus a pleasure to recommend.
