New Warriors Cast

Who are the heroes in Marvel’s New Warriors Show?

The Avengers are relics of the past. The defenders? Who even cares. The New Warriors though. That’s a super-powered team with some big name recognition. Time to meet the New Warriors Cast.

Marvel have confirmed our heroes for the upcoming New Warriors Cast. As promised, Squirrel Girl is going to be the team leader, but she’s definitely going to have some competition for fans. So let’s run through our protagonists, and I’ll be offering a little colour commentary below each profile.

Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl) (and Tippy Toe)
Superpower: “The powers of a squirrel, the powers of a girl” (is acrobatic, strong, can fight, can talk to squirrels)
Doreen is a totally empowered fangirl. She is a natural leader—confident and tough, but not innocent. Doreen is bouncy and energetic and her greatest quality is her optimism… She has faith in others and inspires people to believe in themselves. She also takes her pet squirrel, Tippy Toe, everywhere. New Warriors Cast Squirrel Girl

Squirrel Girl is the A list Star here. She’s massively popular with fans for her optimism, savvy attitude and general good heart. And Tippy Toe, if they have her talk, is going to be a sarcastic source of exposition and comic relief.

Craig Hollis (Mister Immortal)
Superpower: Cannot die.  Ever.  Maybe.  So he says.
The team troublemaker and lothario… Craig is kind of like “The Most Interesting Man Alive,” except he’s more cocky than confident and at times, charmingly grumpy. Although Craig’s superpower seems amazing, he hasn’t made use of it at all—he’s lazy and figures if he has all the time in the world to learn how to fight, what’s the rush?New Warriors Cast Mr Immortal

Mr Immortal is supposed to be a bit useless, cowardly and kinda lame. So basically all they’ve done here is age him down to a teenager, which will fit the character and powerset pretty well.

Dwayne Taylor (Night Thrasher)
Superpower: None
Dwayne is a local celebrity “hero” with his very own YouTube channel.  Brilliant, strong, noble, and maybe a bit full of himself, Dwayne is a shameless self-promoter and entrepreneur.  But he also deeply believes in justice — at least his version of it. Dwayne hides the fact that he comes from a really rich family because he’s afraid he’ll lose his street cred.New Warriors Cast Night Thrasher

Night Thrasher is thankfully having his tragic backstory about parental death somewhat removed. (Possibly to avoid Batman Comparisons) However, the original team leader of the New Warriors is getting a familiar, if fun, character arc it seems. The idea of an unpowered costume vigilante is something fun we haven’t really seen in the MCU yet.

Robbie Baldwin (Speedball)
Superpower: Can launch kinetic balls of energy
Robbie grew up watching Quinjets take off from Avengers Tower and loves the idea of being a hero. He’s an impulsive and immature people-pleaser with a misplaced sense of confidence. Although you would think throwing kinetic balls of energy would be awesome and effective – his are completely out of control.New Warriors Cast Speedball

Speedball is basically a gigantic ball of energy and fun. In the comics, he’s one of those characters that gets broken as a hero to show there are real stakes to fighting villains. Judging by his fanboy background, he’s probably going to end up needing a pep talk when he finds out how hard being a hero is.

Zack Smith (Microbe)
Superpower: Can talk to germs
Zack is a shy hypochondriac whose ability nearly makes him a telepath — the germs tell him where you’ve been, what you ate and who you hung out with.  It’s impossible to keep secrets around him.  He’s a big sweet guy the team takes under their wing, and they help him find and grow his own confidence. New Warriors Cast Microbe

Poor Microbe really didn’t get that far in the comics before his untimely death at the start of the Civil War event. Even before that, he had a horrible life with his scientist father. However, this means that barring a positive, helpful attitude, he’s basically a blank slate for the writers to work with. Also, supposed to be a mutant, so I’ve no idea how Fox is dealing with that.

Deborah Fields (Debrii)
Superpower: Low level telekinetic; trickster
Deborah is proud, funny and quick witted.  Confidently out as a lesbian, Deborah has experienced deep loss in her personal life as a direct result of super “heroics.” She can take care of herself, or at least says she can.  She’s the one who calls people on their BS and has no fear of putting her opinions out there. New Warriors Cast Debrii

Debrii was added to the New Warriors when they were putting together a Reality TV Show about their heroics. She was put in the team to be abrasive and cause conflict. The writers have kept that, and evidently decided that it needed some justification with a mysteriously tragic past.

So that’s your New Warriors Cast. No acting talent has been unveiled yet, but I can see Marvel Television wanting mostly new talent or bit actors to keep costs down and showcase some new player

So here’s the thing.

This feels like the series might be a mix of multiple teams Squirrel Girl has had interactions with. She’s definitely the crutch this series is being built around.

Speedball is probably the most famous member of the New Warriors in the comics, having been responsible for the inciting incident in the first Civil War event through his carelessness. But he’s also been a love interest for Squirrel Girl, who tried to rescue him from his own depression when the above tragedy occurred.

Mr Immortal is one of the founding members of the Great Lakes Avengers. Who are the biggest joke team Marvel has at their disposal. They were lazy, uncoordinated and more interested in relaxing than heroics. In fact, their primary claim to fame is that Squirrel Girl once left the group because she felt that she was holding back their development as heroes.

Because she kept taking on all their opponents solo.

And winning.

Squirrel Girl is the best.

Anyway, the point is, this series seems to be mashing together bits of the comics canon as it sees fit, with the only anchor being Squirrel Girl. That’s a lot of pressure on a character that fans will already be demanding a lot of. It’s going to take a good writing team and a solid actress to manage to pull off that position.
