Star Wars Battlefront: Initial Impressions

October 9, 2015 Conor Caulfield 0

Battlefront is exhilarating and fantastic, a sensory overload of an experience. I have spent the last day or so playing the beta for the followup to the games that pretty much define what Star Wars is for me. I really hope that the rest of it is this good.

Sony Conference Wrap Up

June 16, 2015 Conor Caulfield 0

Uncharted 4 is the big draw here, alongside No Man’s Sky, both of which we will be hoping for release dates and new gameplay. Volume will probably make a new appearance, Mike Bithell is about the conference with a build. Bloodborne expansion should be coming up soon enough, hints here to take advantage of the games ridiculous sales. We may see Destiny stuff here, and the lack of Call of Duty stuff in Microsoft’s conference makes me suspect that exclusivity has switched sides. Morpheus maybe? Some sort of answer to Microsoft’s news in the last few weeks. We do have news that Fallout 4 is probably going to feature mods as well as the Xbone. In addition, Sony’s conference last year had serious pacing issues, hopefully this year will be slightly more apt.

Ubisoft Conference Summary

June 15, 2015 Conor Caulfield 0

Preamble: Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate will be the big one here, gameplay sequence seems likely, I would hope very much we’ll be seeing the female assassin character, help smooth over last year’s faux pas. In addition, the continuation of the Assassin Creed: Chronicle spin offs seems likely here. Hopefully more from their indie teams, Grow Home, Valiant Hearts, Child of Light etc really made good grounds for Ubi in the last few years, so support for them would be lovely. The Division is now really overdue for a confirmed ship date and more up to date gameplay displays, hopefully we get this soon. Rainbow Six Siege will probably be big enough draw, looking to give a bit of Tom Clancy credibility to proceedings.

Microsoft Conference Recap

June 15, 2015 Conor Caulfield 0

Preamble: First things first, Platinum’s Scalebound is appearing at Gamescom, not E3, so don’t get too hyped. Same thing with Crackdown. Gears of War collection remaster details leaked, we can expect an announcement more likely than not. Rise of the Tomb Raider, gameplay has been promised, maybe we will see an actual tomb based puzzle this time. Halo 5 Guardians is probably gonna be the big show here, I’d be very surprised with no gameplay demo, or campaign. Fable legends, they’ve gotta make something of this, especially as it’s launching on Windows 10, Mojang should be up here, hololens or not, the telltale game might appear. Rare are supposedly working on a brand new original project, and Kotaku seems to have word of a rare classics collection being prepared. We shall see. Plus, the news that Oculus and Xbox are linking to share controllers, so we may find some news about that. And will we see Call of Duty and DLC timed exclusivity? I imagine we will.

Bethesda Conference Catch Up

June 15, 2015 Conor Caulfield 0

Preamble: Bethesda kicks things off this year. The newcomer has a lot to prove, and they certainly seem to be heading that way. They’re coming in on three main prongs. Starting early and surprising pretty much everyone, they unveiled Fallout 4 earlier this month, showing off a teaser that will probably lead to a gameplay reveal during the conference. Secondly, the DOOM reboot has been teased, and gameplay is all but certain, lest we riot. Thirdly, and most recently, an open mic leak on a twitch test stream on Saturday accidentally revealed Dishonoured 2. Not that shocking as a sequel goes, but that’s a welcome addition. So three games at least, hopefully all showing gameplay, to get things started. As for other stuff, I’d assume Elder Scrolls online will be due for some sort of gameplay expansion, especially as the console versions only launched a while ago. As for anything else, not a clue. Wolfenstein making an appearance maybe?

Why Stannis Baratheon had no choice.

June 8, 2015 Conor Caulfield 0

Well then, now we’re alone, let me explain why Princess Shireen Baratheon had to be burned alive. And yeah, I’m aware that her death was suggested by GRRM and this means Shireen is not going to long for the print canon either, I get that, it makes sense given her situation in the books. I don’t particularly think that it was massively out of character for Stannis to do this either. Admittedly, coming off the father/daughter scenes in previous episodes, it’s a little hard to see that change so quickly. And of course, that sequence was horrifically brutal to watch. Even so this all makes sense when you consider what Stannis’s narrative is about, and why this is actually retelling a much older story. It actually didn’t click with me till this last episode of Game of Thrones. With Shireen’s death, it finally let the penny drop for me about Stannis and why his storyline always feels so disconnected and off compared to everyone else. You know how there’s that idea that Game Of Thrones is the War of the Roses but with dragons? That’s pretty accurate for how things started out, but Stannis isn’t part of that. Stannis is in his own Greek epic, travelling Westeros to build an army and conquer the kingdoms. He’s even got his own personal oracle telling him his future. Melisandre is the Cassandra of this story, offering her version of the future. Stannis is the warrior king with his epithets and his journey. Read More
