Spiderman Homecoming: First Trailer Released!

Your first look at the Spiderman Homecoming trailer was last night, and since then it has spread all over the web.

So first things first, the American domestic trailer has a whole different cut to the international trailer. There’s much more high school focus in the domestic trailer, which tallies with what we know about the film so far.

On that note, really liking the high school dweeb aspect. This is a kid Peter Parker. He’s supposed to be kind of a loser, but not an outcast. Giving him a small group of friends to be an actual human being towards will do a lot to get rid of the taste of Andrew Garfield and his awful, awful scripts.
In tandem, oh god I’m glad he’s quipping under the mask. Spiderman is supposed to be a terrified motor mouth, talking so the bad guys cant see how scared he is. I was genuinely worried they would lose that element from Civil War, but that opening bank scene seems just as good.

Secondly, there is a lot of Robert Downey Junior in both these trailers. Between the recap of Captain America: Civil War and then three/four scenes, I’m imagining Iron Man is going to be in this movie for a generous portion. It makes sense with the whole mentor angle, I just hope he doesn’t take over the film too much.

Then we have our first look at Michael Keaton’s Vulture. While there’s a whole machinery angle going on with the suit, the addition of the chest ruff keeps the whole thing comic friendly.
It also helps to distance the design from the inexcusably bad Amazing Spider Man design for the Sinister Six and Vulture.

This also explains why the finally felt they could add the webbing wings to the Spiderman suit, presumably for dealing with an airborne foe.

Keaton appears to be part of a team of four bank robbers, foiled by Spidey, and using some sort of high (alien) tech weapon. We’re seeing alien tech turn up all over the MCU now, including recently in Luke Cage, so this is a nice way of tying things together.

In my head, and knowing Sony is involved, still pining for their Sinister Six movie, this means the other three characters are probably villains too. We maybe see Donald Glover’s Tinkerer character here, the supposed Shocker we’re getting too, or maybe that shadow that, as some have hoped, is Kraven the Hunter.

Finally, that closing shot of spiderman holding the structure together gives me exactly what I wanted to see from this film. My favourite super hero movie (the best super hero movie in many peoples opinions) is Spider-Man 2. The train scene in particular is amazing, not just for the scene of Spiderman using himself to stop the runaway train, but also the fact that it inspires the crowd. Same as the bridge scene in Spider-man (1). They show honest to god heart, and give their heroism meaning. That’s something even Marvel haven’t quite gotten perfect yet. I’ll be really pleased if they get it right here.
