Ubisoft’s Open World Conference

June 13, 2016 Conor Caulfield 0

So Ubisoft then. Well, No Assassin’s Creed this year. Doesn’t mean no teaser, but don’t expect any gameplay. The same can be assumed for Far cry as well. South Park, The Fractured But Whole, For Honour and Ghost Recon: WIldlands are all but guaranteed to be getting release dates and big features, I would also expect another look at the Division expansion. Maybe we will see Watch Dogs 2. But I want to hope they’re keeping that all to its little announcement ceremony before E3 proper. Because otherwise it’s just likely to give people snark to work with. And there’s always the persistent hope that Beyond Good and Evil 2 and Prince of Persia will appear.

Bethesda Conference Blowout

Bethesda had their first conference last year, and it was easily one of the most impressive. But that was largely due to the presence of Doom and the hype for Fallout 4. Now, can they match up?

EA Experience 2016

Pre-E3 Pre Amble. Not technically going with a conference this year, EA is hosting EA Play Events in Los Angeles and London, but also broadcasting their new trailers in a timed message around about the same moment. So nothing really changed then for the majority of the audience watching at home.

PRE-3

So E3 this year has begun early, with multiple new titles all being unveiled in the weeks prior to the event. The thinking behind all of this is that the games won’t be lost in the crush of the main conferences, or get overshadowed by bigger, more entertaining announcements. So in that respect, let’s look at this crush of games that all hit at once and that I’m gonna lump together.

Spring Nintendo Direct

March 3, 2016 Conor Caulfield 0

Directly to you. Through me. So shall we try that again? No Pokemon to steal the show this time. Nintendo Direct for the 3rd of March 2016, covering all the games of spring and summer. Presumably this will be taking us right up to E3 and the NX announcement. Speaking of which, no news here. They’re holding off on that, even more so than expected. This does mean that if we don’t hear too much about Zelda WiiU here, I’ll be putting more faith in those rumours about the NX and the double platform launch.

Pokemon Direct.

February 26, 2016 Conor Caulfield 0

So today, 26th February, Nintendo will be gracing us with the second Nintendo Direct of the year. As the first focussed only on Smash Bros, the second will similarly be an all Pokemon agenda. So what can we expect?

Lego Avengers Review: Needs more Assembly.

February 10, 2016 Conor Caulfield 1

I really wanted this game to be great. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (the predecessor to this game) was a slightly flawed, but delightfully enchanting entry in the Lego X franchise, with it’s capacity for whimsy, huge cast of Marvel Characters and a whole island of Manhattan to have characters like Spiderman and Hulk fight and wander over.

Lego Avengers is in many ways a step back.

Microsoft Conference Recap

June 15, 2015 Conor Caulfield 0

Preamble: First things first, Platinum’s Scalebound is appearing at Gamescom, not E3, so don’t get too hyped. Same thing with Crackdown. Gears of War collection remaster details leaked, we can expect an announcement more likely than not. Rise of the Tomb Raider, gameplay has been promised, maybe we will see an actual tomb based puzzle this time. Halo 5 Guardians is probably gonna be the big show here, I’d be very surprised with no gameplay demo, or campaign. Fable legends, they’ve gotta make something of this, especially as it’s launching on Windows 10, Mojang should be up here, hololens or not, the telltale game might appear. Rare are supposedly working on a brand new original project, and Kotaku seems to have word of a rare classics collection being prepared. We shall see. Plus, the news that Oculus and Xbox are linking to share controllers, so we may find some news about that. And will we see Call of Duty and DLC timed exclusivity? I imagine we will.

Bethesda Conference Catch Up

June 15, 2015 Conor Caulfield 0

Preamble: Bethesda kicks things off this year. The newcomer has a lot to prove, and they certainly seem to be heading that way. They’re coming in on three main prongs. Starting early and surprising pretty much everyone, they unveiled Fallout 4 earlier this month, showing off a teaser that will probably lead to a gameplay reveal during the conference. Secondly, the DOOM reboot has been teased, and gameplay is all but certain, lest we riot. Thirdly, and most recently, an open mic leak on a twitch test stream on Saturday accidentally revealed Dishonoured 2. Not that shocking as a sequel goes, but that’s a welcome addition. So three games at least, hopefully all showing gameplay, to get things started. As for other stuff, I’d assume Elder Scrolls online will be due for some sort of gameplay expansion, especially as the console versions only launched a while ago. As for anything else, not a clue. Wolfenstein making an appearance maybe?
