Project Resistance Tyrant

Project Resistance Resurrects Resident Evil Multiplayer

A teaser released today from Capcom has hinted at the next title in their Resident Evil series. Project Resistance is coming.

Resident Evil hasn’t been as consistently popular and positively reviewed in a while. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard represented a refreshing take on new entries in the series, while the Remaster of Resident Evil 2 released earlier this year has gone down stunningly well with both existing fans and newcomers.

Now Capcom seem to be hinting at a return to another, less universally popular, Resident Evil Experiment. Multiplayer. Cue Project Resistance.

Project Resistance is the working title. The trailer depicts a team of four people using ranged and melee weapons to take down a horde of zombies. Simultaneously, a mysterious director controls the action from afar, unleashing Lickers and other special zombies. The trailer even ends with a hulking tyrant stepping out and being directly controlled by the director.

There are more than a few similarities to Valve’s Left 4 Dead series present here, in case that wasn’t clear. While the trailer was clearly CG and illustrative, we can probably assume a few things from it.

This is likely to be a 4 Player Co-op game. Potentially this may include more asymetric players in the role of the director unleashing monsters, or the monsters themselves.

The trailer seems to be rendered in the same style as the Resident Evil 2 remake. Considering how positively that game was reviewed in spite of changes in gameplay from the original, it’s not unlikely to see the style and systems replicated here. Especially considering the look of that Tyrant at the end of the trailer.

We can see both melee and ranged weapons in the trailer, including guns, bats and even explosive gadgets. This is similar again to the Left 4 Dead series, and likely hints at the range of equipment to be expected in the game.

Project Resistance Team

This looks like a considered, paced Left 4 Dead game. If Project Resistance is a game a focus on survival horror style ammo management could be very entertaining. Especially one drawing on the settings and monsters of the Resident Evil series.

A full reveal has been scheduled at Tokyo Game Show,so expect more news to arrive from September 12th.
