Metal Gear Survive: Konami Zombifies Metal Gear

Well this feels appropriate. Announced today, Konami presents Metal Gear Survive for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The game represents a turnaround for Konami, who had been very reticent to commit to  any major games releases on the traditional consoles and were thought to be focusing heavily on Pachinko games. The lack of the “Solid” subtitle betrays the fact that series protagonist Snake will not be featuring, so check out your new heroes below.

Those who questioned how Konami would continue the series without the presence of Hideo Kojima now get their answer. The answer is…

An online Multiplayer co-op game based around surviving against zombie like creatures, quite probably in an open world. Starring (currently) no existing Metal Gear characters.

The game is set in an alternate universe, where the survivors of the attack on Militaires Sans Frontaires at the end of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes watch as Snake flies away, only to be sucked through a wormhole to an alternate reality filled with petrified humanoid zombies. And judging by the sound at the end of the trailer, at least one Metal Gear.

Huh. I’d argue that this makes absolutely no sense. If I wasn’t talking about the Metal Gear series. A series where I have had multiple plot explanations reduced down to: “Magical Nanomachines” As a result of that context, this gets downgraded to just silly.

Just a cinematic trailer, but since Konami held on to the Fox engine and that logo has a very prominent V, it seems likely this will be running a very similar gameplay style to Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V.

The question is, can this series continue without the auteur Kojima having his own particular influence over it?

Konami is hoping so.
